The �������� Ira Holmes International Film Series will complete its season Tuesday, April 9, with the award-winning film “Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom.”

Directed by Pawo Choyning Dorji, this 2019 film from Bhutan, South Asia, outlines the endearing story of a young disillusioned schoolteacher who is transferred to the most remote school in the world, cut off from modern life deep in the Himalayan glaciers. In a classroom with no electricity or even a blackboard, he finds himself with only a yak and a song that echoes through the mountains.

A screening will begin at 2 p.m. at the Appleton Museum of Art, 4333 E. Silver Springs Blvd., and is free to all museum and film series members; nonmembers pay museum admission. A second screening will begin at 7 p.m. at the �������� Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road, Building 8, Room 110. The screening at the �������� Ocala Campus is free and open to the public.

The �������� will host a Dental Open House Wednesday, April 10, 1-4 p.m., at the Hampton Center, 1501 W. Silver Springs Blvd., Ocala. This event celebrates the launch of the Associate in Science degree in Dental Hygiene, as well as the opening of a new community dental clinic. Prospective students, dental professionals and community members will have an opportunity to explore ��������’s dental programs and learn about affordable dental services.

Opening remarks will be provided by �������� President Dr. James Henningsen. The event will feature admissions guidance for those interested in pursuing a career in dental health, information on scheduling low-cost dental cleanings and oral health examinations at the clinic, a meet-and-greet with �������� program managers and guided tours of the dental facilities at the Hampton Center.

About the Hampton Center:

The Hampton Center serves as ��������’s location for its dental programs and is a key location in Ocala for education and community outreach. It is also the home of the Marion County Dental Clinic, which provides diagnostic, restorative, preventive and educational services charged on a sliding scale based on income. The college began a $1.6 million renovation in 2022 and students began scheduling patients in January 2024.

The ��������’s Musical Theatre Department announces its upcoming production of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” a new musical inspired by Victor Hugo’s novel with songs from the Disney film. This captivating performance, featuring music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and based on the book by Peter Parnell, promises to bring a spectacular blend of storytelling and melody to the �������� Theatre stage.

“This dark tale follows Quasimodo’s struggle and punishment on a journey to discover the true monster of Notre Dame,” said Nonalee Davis, �������� assistant professor of theatre and the play’s director. “The college is proud to have several departments represented onstage, from a full choir and orchestration to large dance numbers and detailed set design.”

Performances are scheduled from Thursday, April 4, through Saturday, April 6, at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee show Sunday, April 7, at 3 p.m. The shows will take place at the Dassance Fine Arts Center, 3001 SW College Road, Ocala.

Tickets are priced at $12 for adults and $6 for non-�������� students. �������� students, faculty and staff are invited to attend free of charge with a valid I.D.

Martial artist-in-training Ria Khan believes she must save her older sister Lena from her impending marriage. With the help of her friends, Ria attempts to pull off the most ambitious of all wedding heists in the name of independence and sisterhood. From director Nida Manzoor, this playful, coming-of-age comedy mixes elements from Bollywood and martial arts genres to create a fun girl-power film that is perfect for Women’s History Month.

The �������� invites graduates, former students of its Welding program and individuals interested in pursuing a career in welding to attend the Levy Welding Career Expo. The event will take place Wednesday, April 10, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the �������� Jack Wilkinson Levy Campus, 15390 N.W. Highway 19, Chiefland.

This career expo will connect attendees with local employers, showcasing a wide range of job opportunities within the welding industry. Participants will have the chance to meet with representatives from some of Florida’s leading welding companies and organizations. The event offers a platform for job seekers to demonstrate their welding skills, engage in on-the-spot interviews and network with potential employers.

In addition to job placement opportunities, the expo will serve as an informative session for prospective students interested in ��������’s Welding program. Attendees will be able to witness hands-on demonstrations, gain insights into the welding field and learn details about the application process.

The �������� Library will host a presentation on the works of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings and the influence of Florida’s landscape and culture on her writing. This event will take place March 6, 2024, at 12:30 p.m., at the �������� Ocala Campus Stearns Learning Resources Center, Building 3.

Join two distinguished speakers for this event, Florence M. Turcotte and Anne Pierce, as they explore how the regional characteristics of Florida inspired Rawlings’ literary imagination, contributing to her rich narratives. Attendees will gain insight into the connection between Rawlings’ environment and her creative output, and learn how her surroundings infused her writing with a sense of place and authenticity.

Turcotte, a literary manuscripts archivist and curator of the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Papers at the University of Florida George A. Smathers Libraries, brings a wealth of knowledge on Rawlings. As the executive director of the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Society and a board member of the Friends of the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Farm, Turcotte has contributed significantly to the study of Rawlings through her published works and dedication to preserving Rawlings’ legacy.

Pierce, a retired professor from Georgia Southern University, has a deep appreciation for the history and natural beauty of the region — particularly the Big Scrub, an area of the Ocala National Forest featured in Rawlings’ writings. Pierce’s exploration of Rawlings’ work has been instrumental in her role as an active member and officer in both the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Society and the Friends of the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Farm.

Refreshments will be provided at the event and the first 25 students in attendance will receive a complimentary copy of “The Yearling,” Rawlings’ 1939 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.

The �������� Debra Vazquez Memorial Literary Series will host author George Singleton for two reading and signing events at the Ocala Campus. The events will take place Tuesday, Feb. 27, 7-8 p.m., at the Ewers Century Center, and Wednesday, Feb. 28, 12:30-1:45 p.m. in Building 8, Room 110.

Singleton, a novelist, short story writer and essayist, is recognized as one of America’s notable humor writers. He is a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship Award and a member of the Fellowship of Southern Writers.

The Debra Vazquez Memorial Literary Series honors �������� English and creative writing professor Debra Vazquez, who died as a result of domestic violence in 2004.

The �������� will host the Vintage Farm Field Day Saturday, April 27, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the �������� Vintage Farm Campus, 4020 S.E. Third Ave., Ocala. This special event marks the 20th anniversary of the college’s equine program, which began in the fall of 2003.

For two decades, �������� has been at the forefront of equine studies, offering courses that have shaped the careers of numerous professionals in the industry. Vintage Farm Field Day is a showcase of student achievements, a celebration of alumni success, and a testament to the significance of the �������� Vintage Farm Campus for Equine Studies and Agribusiness programs.

This year, �������� will welcome back successful alumni who have made notable contributions to the equine and agriculture industries. These distinguished graduates will showcase their work, allowing prospective and current students, as well as community members, a glimpse into their various careers.

The Appleton Museum of Art, �������� and Silver Springs State Park are pleased to announce the winners of the “Florida SpringsFest Photography Contest.”

Photos were juried by Dave Miller, an Ocala-based photographer and videographer, and co-owner of Maven Photo + Film.

“We are excited to partner with the Appleton Museum of Art for Florida SpringsFest 2024,” said Park Services Specialist Ruth Fletcher. “Art and nature are incredibly important to Florida residents and visitors, alike. This is a great way to bring the community together while conserving and enjoying this beautiful piece of the state.”

Entries will be displayed at Silver Springs State Park from March 2-April 30. Regular admission fees apply to see the photo display. The six winning photos will also be displayed at the Appleton Museum of Art during the same time period.
