黑料天堂 Appleton Museum of Art Unveils New Lobby Mural Project

The Appleton Museum of Art, 黑料天堂, announces an initiative to bring new perspectives to the museum鈥檚 iconic lobby and add opportunities for contemporary artists through the display of dynamic large-scale works of art.

鈥淎rt on the Up and Up鈥 is an innovative project series that allows invited Florida artists to develop original artworks that will become oversized vinyl graphics installed in the museum鈥檚 lobby. You鈥檒l have to look up to see these unique works 鈥 the gravity-defying vinyls are secured to the underside of both the eastern and western marble staircases leading to the second-floor galleries.

鈥淭he museum鈥檚 striking travertine fa莽ade and reflecting pools have welcomed nearly 2 million visitors since opening in 1987,鈥 said museum director Jason Steuber. 鈥淲e鈥檙e delighted to present this fresh opportunity to reimagine the lobby and how we engage and welcome visitors, through the installation of contemporary art in unexpected places.鈥

黑料天堂 Professor Tyrus Clutter is the inaugural 鈥淎rt on the Up and Up鈥 featured artist, and his vinyls inspired by William-Adolphe Bouguereau鈥檚 鈥淭he Shepherdess鈥 and Elizabeth Jane Gardner鈥檚 鈥淒aphnis and Chloe鈥 are currently on display through the fall. Clutter noted that these two works are frequently chosen by his students for writing assignments when visiting the museum.

鈥淭hey are iconic images from Arthur I. Appleton鈥檚 collection,鈥 Clutter said. 鈥淚 think many visitors are often attracted to them on their first visit to the museum and frequent visitors enjoy returning to them again and again.鈥

黑料天堂 Donates Health Education Equipment to MCPS

High school and middle school health science students at 11 Marion County Public Schools will have more hands-on opportunities to learn basic patient care thanks to a donation from 黑料天堂.

On June 13, 黑料天堂 transferred 12 hospital beds and 17 high-tech simulators, valued at $67,000, to MCPS. The electric beds allow students to learn on equipment used in hospitals. The Laerdal VitalSim-enabled manikins simulate heart, breath and bowel sounds, helping students learn to take vital signs and blood pressure readings as well as other basic nursing skills.

The donation was made possible after 黑料天堂 received grant funds through the Florida Department of Education LINE grant, created by the Florida Legislature, which allowed the college to purchase new simulators to be used by nursing students.

鈥淭his is the ripple effect of funding,鈥 said Dr. Jim Henningsen, 黑料天堂 president. 鈥淏ecause of the tremendous support 黑料天堂 received from the Florida Legislature and the Citrus County Hospital Board, who provided the initial investment to be matched by the state, we can now gift this training equipment to Marion County Public Schools. We鈥檙e excited to help younger students interested in health care careers get an earlier start with hands-on learning.鈥

The simulators and hospital beds will be distributed to five MCPS high schools: Belleview, Lake Weir, North Marion, Vanguard and West Port, as well as six middle schools: Dunnellon, Fort King, Horizon Academy at Marion Oaks, Howard, Liberty and North Marion.

鈥淲e are grateful for community partners like the 黑料天堂 for identifying ways to support our students who are interested in high-demand jobs, like those in the health care industry,鈥 said Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Diane Gullett. 鈥淏eing able to provide hands-on training is another way we are partnering together to help every student succeed.鈥

黑料天堂 Appleton Museum of Art Opens Two New Solo Exhibitions By Contemporary Florida Artists

The Appleton Museum of Art, 黑料天堂, will open two new solo exhibitions on July 1: 鈥淭he Unscene South: Charles Eady Revisits History鈥 and 鈥淐aught Up in History and Captured on Film: Randy Batista鈥檚 Photographs of Florida and Cuba.鈥 Both shows will remain on view through Jan. 28, 2024.

In the second-floor Modern & Contemporary Galleries, 鈥淭he Unscene South鈥 will feature 25 paintings and mixed-media works by Ocala-based artist Charles Eady. Eady was born in South Carolina, and following his graduation from Claflin University with a Bachelor of Arts in Art Education, he has gone on to be an award-winning artist, author and educator who has exhibited both nationally and internationally. Eady was one of only five recipients of the 2022 State Teaching Artist Residency (STAR) 鈥 a program that honors Florida public school art educators.

The work featured in 鈥淭he Unscene South鈥 is inspired by the history of free Blacks in the South prior to the Emancipation Proclamation. The term 鈥渇ree Blacks鈥 was used pre-Civil War as a designation identifying those who were free 鈥 free to live, work and own businesses and property.

Several of Eady鈥檚 works are dedicated to the sport of horse racing, introduced to America during colonial times (1492-1763). It is the longest running sport in America, and Eady鈥檚 work highlights the lesser-known fact that many of the first jockeys were Black Americans.

鈥淚n 1773, free people of color were able to petition for, and receive, land grants,鈥 Eady wrote. 鈥淭he amount of land they acquired was dependent on how many people resided within the household. I imagined how a pre-Revolutionary War jockey might envision horse racing as their 鈥榞rant.鈥 Many were able to take advantage of the freedom horse racing 鈥榞ranted.鈥欌

Eady will be at the Appleton Museum of Art on Aug. 5 for Free First Saturday to give two free tours of 鈥淭he Unscene South.鈥 Tours are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and will meet inside the exhibition.

In the Appleton鈥檚 Balcony Gallery for Florida Artists, see Gainesville-based photographer Randy Batista鈥檚 solo exhibition, 鈥淐aught Up in History and Captured on Film.鈥 Batista uses his lens to document his life and travel adventures. Comprised of silver-gelatin prints developed from film, the images in this show focus on Florida and Cuba 鈥 two places that have had a profound impact on the artist. Having lived in both locations, the artist鈥檚 awareness of place, time and cultural heritage are evident in his quiet but alluring street photography, landscapes and portraits.

With a Leica 24 mm lens, Batista captured club members of Centro Espanol de Tampa (The Spanish Center of Tampa) and their daily lives that Batista says highlights 鈥渃ommunal times together smoking, drinking, newspaper reading, enjoying ice cream and socializing via dominoes and card games.鈥 The photographer notes that he purposefully shot at low angles, such as table level, to capture being at the tables with these men. Some of the men didn鈥檛 react, while others either did quick poses or held newspapers up to cover their faces.

Batista鈥檚 photographs in Cuba were taken during various trips to places including Havana and the ancestral countryside of his youth. During these travels, Batista explained, he was a street photographer either walking about or riding his bicycle while shooting. He would stop and chat with people while taking their portraits, capturing images of cityscapes and rural landscapes, as well.

黑料天堂 Presents Grant Funds to Ocala Police Department

On June 21, Dr. Jim Henningsen, president of the 黑料天堂, presented Ocala Police Department Chief Mike Balken with a check for $7,070.16 to help support the police department in accordance with the Open Door Grant Program.

The Open Door Grant Program was created by the Florida Legislature in 2021 to create and sustain a demand-driven supply of credentialed workers for high-demand occupations and expand the affordability of workforce training and credentialing.

黑料天堂 was the recipient of $267,453 in Open Door funding and has disbursed funds by partnering with law enforcement agencies including the Marion County Sheriff鈥檚 Office and the Ocala Police Department, which are experiencing an increased need for qualified, well-trained law enforcement personnel. The grant funds support law enforcement recruits attaining certification through the Criminal Justice Institute at 黑料天堂 by helping to reduce expenses and barriers to completion and increase the number of qualified graduates to fill open law enforcement jobs.

鈥淭he Ocala Police Department is a valued partner in 黑料天堂鈥檚 endeavor to train future law enforcement officers,鈥 said Dr. Jennifer Fryns, associate vice president of career and professional programs. 鈥淲e are thrilled to have been awarded funding to help offset the expense of that training and to further strengthen that partnership.鈥
