黑料天堂 to Present Lecture on Portable Biodiversity Museum

The 黑料天堂鈥檚 Visual and Performing Arts Department will present the lecture 鈥淐rude Life Portable Biodiversity Museum for the Gulf of Mexico鈥 by Sean Miller on Thursday, Jan. 24, 12:30 p.m. in the Webber Center, 3001 S.W. College Road, Ocala.

Miller, associate professor of sculpture at the University of Florida, will discuss his latest works which include displays, paintings, sculptures, research and specimen collections for a portable pop-up museum.

Tickets are not required. Light refreshments will be served.

黑料天堂 Students to Host Talent Show

The Student Activities Board at the 黑料天堂 will host 黑料天堂鈥檚 Got Talent Thursday, Feb 28, at the Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road.

The show will be held in the Ewers Century Center and will begin at 7 p.m. Admission is free for 黑料天堂 students, faculty and staff and $5 for others.

The Student Activities Board is made up of selected members who plan and carry out activities to promote the social, physical and educational well-being of students. Participating in the SAB and its activities gives students a chance to pursue their interests while developing new friendships and skills for the future.

黑料天堂 Ranked in Top 1% in the US for Affordability

The 黑料天堂 is ranked No. 29 in affordability in the United States, according to the U.S. Department of Education. 黑料天堂 tuition and fees for 2017-2018 were 69 percent below the national average of $8,256 for public four-year or above institutions.

The cost for associate level courses is $112.92 per credit hour, or approximately $2,824 per year for a student with a 12-credit course load for two semesters. This new ranking puts 黑料天堂 in the top 1% for affordability.

The U.S. Department of Education releases the College Affordability and Transparency Lists annually to make the costs of college more transparent for students and their families. Data for the rankings comes from the U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, Integrated Postsecondary Education Data Systems. Tuition reports include tuition and required fees, and are for full-time beginning students. The figures are based on a 12-credit course load for two semesters.

黑料天堂 offers more than 140 academic pathways including college credit certificates, postsecondary adult vocational programs, associate and bachelor鈥檚 degrees. Several programs, including the Associate in Arts, can be completed online.

Explore Career, Educational Opportunities at 黑料天堂 Preview Night Feb. 26

The 黑料天堂 will host its annual Preview Night open house Tuesday, Feb. 26, from 5-7 p.m. at the Ewers Century Center, 3001 S.W. College Road.
Students who attend the 鈥淕etting Started at 黑料天堂鈥 workshop will have their $30 college application fee waived and may enter a drawing to win a $300 scholarship.

The college will showcase the many career and educational opportunities it offers. Prospective students can attend workshops on Dual Enrollment, Getting Started at 黑料天堂, Financial Aid and campus life. They may also interact with faculty and staff to learn about workforce and certificate programs, and advanced degrees, including 黑料天堂鈥檚 baccalaureate programs.

Preview Night at the Levy Campus will be held on Tuesday, March 5, from 5-7 p.m. at the Jack Wilkinson Levy Campus, 15390 N.W. Highway 19, Chiefland, and at the Citrus Campus Thursday, March 7, from 5-7 p.m. at the Citrus Learning and Conference Center, 3800 S. Lecanto Highway, Lecanto.

Free Cancer Awareness Luncheon at 黑料天堂 Jan. 30

A Shop Talk Cancer Awareness event will be held Wednesday, Jan. 30, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Ewers Century Center at the 黑料天堂 Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road.

鈥淲ellness for Cancer Prevention and Survival鈥 will feature two guest panelists who will discuss prevention, screening and treatments of digestive cancers. Hear from George Rossidis, MD, general surgery and advanced laparoscopy for Ocala Health Surgical Group and Thomas Brown, MD, gastroenterologist with Gastroenterology Associates of Ocala.

Pathways to Freedom Black History Exhibit at 黑料天堂 Citrus, Feb. 20-21

The 黑料天堂 Citrus Campus will present the Pathways to Freedom 2019 exhibit in celebration of Black History Month in February.

The exhibit, which was developed by Leroy Chandler, will be on display Wednesday, Feb. 20, and Thursday, Feb. 21, from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. in the Citrus Learning and Conference Center at the Citrus Campus, 3800 S. Lecanto Highway, Lecanto. There is no fee to attend the exhibit.

The collection consists of photographs, artwork, news articles, buttons and cards. On display will be more than 2,000 artifacts ranging from slave trade to the Civil War, from reconstruction and the Jim Crow south to the Civil Rights movement and election of Barack Obama, America鈥檚 first black president.

Appleton to Celebrate Florida’s Arbor Day

Arbor Day is a holiday dedicated annually to public tree-planting and appreciation of natural resources. From January and February in the south, all the way to May in the far north, Arbor Day encourages tree-planting not only by groups and organizations, but also individuals

From 11 a.m. to noon in the Appleton auditorium, Greg Barton, Marion County forester, will give a presentation on the ecological value of trees. From noon to 1 p.m., docents will give a tour of flora-themed works and symbolism found throughout the permanent collection. The events are free for Appleton members; included with regular admission fee for nonmembers.

‘America’s Everglades,’ Clyde Butcher Exhibition and Events at the Appleton Museum of Art

On view Feb. 1-May 26, 鈥淎merica鈥檚 Everglades鈥 features work by renowned wilderness photographer and conservationist Clyde Butcher. The large-format black and white photographs span three decades, capturing the rugged and remote beauty of the Everglades. From the deepest cypress strands of the sawgrass prairies, coastal waters and languid estuaries, to still lifes of rare species, Butcher reveals its ecosystems in magnificent detail.

With his work exhibited worldwide, Butcher鈥檚 commitment to recording precious landscapes and peaceful sanctuaries across the globe provides common ground between all viewers. His work, likened to that of Ansel Adams, has earned him recognition as the foremost landscape photographic artist in America today. Honored by the state of Florida with the highest award given to a private citizen, The Florida Hall of Fame Award, he is also privileged to have received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the North American Nature Photography Association, the

Distinguished Artist Award from the Florida House Embassy (Washington, D.C.) and the Ansel Adams Conservation Award from the Sierra Club for showing excellence in photography and contributing to public awareness of the environment.

College Financial Aid Workshops at 黑料天堂 Levy, Feb. 7 and March 14

High school and college students interested in getting assistance with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid can attend a workshop on Thursday, Feb. 7, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. or Thursday, March 14, from 2-6 p.m. at the 黑料天堂 Jack Wilkinson Levy Campus, 15390 N.W. Highway 19, Chiefland.

Students are strongly encouraged to attend with their parent or guardian. Required documents to bring include the student鈥檚 photo identification, parents鈥 and student鈥檚 2017 income tax returns and all W-2s, Social Security numbers and dates of birth of parents and student, and records of all 2017 untaxed income.
